DiGeorge syndrome is characterized by the deletion of a small segment (22q11.2) located on the long arm of chromosome 22. This genetic change causes a variety of medical problems that can affect different organ systems. Heart defects, immune system weakness, endocrine problems, facial structure abnormalities, and nervous system problems are the most common symptoms. This syndrome can be inherited, but in many cases it also appears as a new mutation.
