The RHD gene is responsible for the production of the Rhesus D (RhD) protein, which is the basis for the blood's Rh factor. Individuals who are RhD positive (Rh+) carry the RhD protein, while those who are RhD negative (Rh-) do not. If Rh incompatibility occurs between an Rh- mother and an Rh+ baby, the mother's body can develop antibodies against the baby's red blood cells. This can cause hemolytic disease in pregnancies and serious medical problems in the baby.
